Top 100 Best Wedding Photographers

Best Wedding Photographers in the UK with the deepest pockets

Wedding Photography Stars

Barely a week goes by without a new Top 100 UK Wedding Photographers list being published somewhere online, swiftly followed by a flurry of Facebook posts by eager snappers keen to point out to their armies of obsequious followers that ‘Hey - I’m proud to be included on this amazing list of awesome wedding photographers’. Well done dude! Awesome - you so deserve that!

All these lists of the Best Wedding Photographers Ever have one thing in common - actually two things in common. The first thing is that I’m never included. This is surely an oversight on the part of the impartial, objective list compilers - I mean have they seen my work! Are they aware of my reputation and the groaning shelf of wedding industry awards! Obviously not or surely I would have made at least one of the lists by now. I’m certainly the best photographer in my neighbourhood and I should make the list. Shouldn’t I?

Recently a London based newspaper published a very bizarre list of the ’13 Best Wedding Photographers in London’. Odd number, I suppose the journalist - I use that word loosely - got bored of looking at wedding photography sites and stopped at 13. I was intrigued by this list and had a closer look. At least one of the photographers is not even based in London so really the list should be called the ‘Top 13 wedding photographers who occasionally travel into London on a Saturday to shoot a friend’s wedding’ or something. Maybe the ‘Top 13 wedding photographers who've visited London’ would be better as a title. I’ve shot a wedding in London so can I be in it next year - why not extend it to 15 photographers if you have time. How long before you can buy a T-shirt on Oxford Street - ‘I shot a wedding in London and all I got was this lousy T-shirt’

Today, just as I’m writing this, another ‘Top 100 Wedding Photographers’ story popped up on social media. Yawn. Some familiar names are on there - mainly photographers  I was familiar with from another list rather than because of the quality of their work. Some of them very definitely not ‘Top Wedding Photographers’  though - Average wedding photographers would be more suitable but I guess a list entitled ‘100 Not Very Inspiring Wedding Photographers’ wouldn’t be that popular. This brings me to the second thing all these lists have in common. It doesn’t take much investigation to uncover the route to making the list - Advertise with the site publishing the list! That’s it - it’s that easy.

The list compilers probably don’t even look at the individual photographer’s websites. The selection process usually works like this. It’s a kind of top photographers list algorithm. How much does each photographer pay to be on our site + How long have they advertised with us = Position in top wedding photographers  list.

Basically these lists are usually rankings of advertisers rather than photographic excellence. In effect they are more useful to marketeers selling advertising to photographers than they are to brides. A quick easy way to see who spends the most on advertising and is listed on the most photography websites.

So if, like me, you are yet to appear as a ‘Top 100 Wedding Photographer’ or ‘Best 13 Wedding Photographers in London’ then leave your name in the comments below, tell me how awesome and amazing I am, send me a fiver and I’ll include you on my extra special list of the ‘Best Wedding Photographers the World has ever seen’. It makes just as much sense as any of the others.

Brilliant - you are definitely awesome for writing about this. Top photographer lists are the oldest SEO trick in the book. Almost as old as the internet. Just designed as clickbait and to generate inbound links. The people who compile them usually have no interest in wedding photography.

Late capitalism eating itself - lists of average photographers who bought a camera and some ad space last year become 'Top' and the 'Best' in 12 months. Long careers running awesome workshops await. Top work Mr Secret Wedding Photographer
